Retirement Readiness Calculator

Retirement Readiness Calculator
Retirement Readiness Calculator
See how your savings might grow and what you could withdraw in retirement
What This Calculator Does
  • Projects portfolio growth using a steady annual return rate you select
  • Uses the traditional 4% rule: withdraws a fixed dollar amount based on 4% of your portfolio at retirement (not 4% of current value each year)
  • Adjusts Social Security benefits based on when you claim (70% at 62, 100% at 67, 124% at 70)
  • Shows year-by-year projections so you can see how your money might last
What It Does Not Account For
  • Taxes: Withdrawals from Traditional IRAs and 401(k)s are taxed as ordinary income. Roth withdrawals are tax-free. This calculator does not reduce withdrawals for taxes.
  • Inflation: The calculator shows future dollar amounts, not purchasing power. $5,000/month in 20 years will buy less than $5,000 today.
  • Market volatility: Returns are assumed steady. In reality, markets fluctuate. A major drop early in retirement (sequence of returns risk) can significantly impact how long your money lasts.
  • Healthcare costs: Medical expenses often increase with age, especially before Medicare eligibility at 65.
  • Changes to Social Security: Future benefit cuts or rule changes are possible but not modeled here.
  • Other income or expenses: Pensions, rental income, part-time work, large purchases, or long-term care needs are not included.
Bottom line: Use this as a starting point for understanding your retirement picture, not as a financial plan. Consider running multiple scenarios with different assumptions.
